Ted Moore and Joan Wills
It is certainly a black day for Monmouth Golf Club as we report the death of two stalwart members of the Club.It is with much regret that we announce the death of a great character and servant of Monmouth Golf Club. E.O. " Ted" Moore was Club Captain in 1977 and also served as secretary and committee member for many years. Our thoughts are with his widow, Hilda, who is, of course , also a long serving member and past Ladies Captain of the MGC. With equal regret we advise of the passing of Joan Wills, a loyal and long serving member who was Ladies Captain in 1971. Our sincere condolences go to Duncan and the rest of the family. We are informed that Ted Moore is to be cremated at the Forest Crematorium at Cinderford on Tuesday 9th December at 2.00pm. Joan Wills funeral service is to be held at St.Thomas, Monmouth on Wednesday 10th. December at 11.00am. Please ensure that the Club is well represented at these ceremonies.
Richard is new Pro at MGC.
The members of the Executive Committee are delighted to announce the appointment. on 4th. December, of well known local professional Richard Ballard as the Club's P.G.A. Professional. Richard, who until recently was professional at Forest Hills Golf Club, will continue to run the Cloeford Driving Range and will be assisted by colleague Will Smith in the two projects. Richard will assume his responsibilities at Monmouth with immediate effect, running the club shop, stocking a range of quality equipment, including custom made clubs, carry out coaching both to groups and one-to-one, operate a club repair service and arrange green fee and society visitors, buggy hire etc. We are sure that Richard and Will's efforts will be rewarded with great success to the mutual benefit of MGC and themselves and trust that members will give them a great welcome and support them whenever possible.

I hope to be in touch very soon with great news about what we intend to do next year, in the meantime if you have any ideas or thoughts about the junior section, please feel free to contact me on my mobile 07767 270633.
2009 HSBC Wee Wonders Local Qualifier to be held at Monmouth Golf Club The 2009 HSBC Wee Wonders Championships will be holding a Local Qualifying round at Monmouth Golf Club, with the date to be announced shortly. This grassroots golf program, the strongest junior golf initiative in the UK and Ireland, provides participants with the opportunity to challenge themselves in a fun, competitive environment. Since HSBC began sponsoring the program in 2003, participation has grown each year and it is expected that 4,500 young golfers will register this year. With the growing popularity of the event and the registration fee only being ₤8, it is accessible to all junior golfers. The programme, open to boys and girls age 5-12, is played on par 3 golf courses throughout the UK and Ireland, with players being split into 7 age groups: Boys 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12Girls 8 and under, 9-10, 11-12 It adopts the “flag format” of competition. Competitors have 36 strokes to play the golf course, and they place a flag where their 36th shot finishes. Winners are those who achieve the greatest distance around the course. Winners in each of the boys and girls age categories from the Local Qualifying round proceed to the corresponding Regional Final, with the winners from there reaching the Grand Final at St. Andrews, Scotland HSBC Wee Wonders competitors have had the opportunity to participate in several high profile events including being part of the HSBC World Match Play Pro-Am in 2006, and 2007. Last year’s Grand Final winners were invited to play in the Pro-Am during HSBC’S Festival of Golf at Turnberry, Scotland. Professionals included Colin Montgomerie, Paul Casey, Retief Goosen, Nick Dougherty, and Sam Torrance. Montgomerie commends the HSBC Wee Wonders programme for “the opportunity it provides young golfers and the chance to experience the value of competition.” Whether your young golfer is aspiring to play on the European Tour or just enjoys being out on the course, HSBC Wee Wonders is a perfect way to play. 2-time winner, Ebonie Lewis sums it up best - after stating that she would like to be the next world champion she also comments she likes golf because “it’s fun.” Registration will be open in the New Year, but for more information on the competition please visit the website at www.hsbcweewonders.com. Registration will be available on the website or entry forms can be obtained from the golf club. EndsMedia Enquiries to Jonathan Thurston at 0207 862 0118 jonathan.thurston@octagon.com

MONMOUTH GOLF CLUB Captains’ Charity Day Despite a forecast of heavy rain and strong winds for Saturday 21st June, the Gods looked down favourably on David Evans, (Club Captain ) and Sue Edwards,(Ladies captain ) for their Captains’ Charity day. Under a cloudy sky, but no rain, a total of 30 teams commenced playing with the 1st fourball teeing off at 9:00am and the last at 2:00pm. The Captain’s Charity day was in aid of the Macmillan Cancer Support and the Micro & Anophthalmic Childrens Society ( MACS ) and these were the two charities chosen by the captains to support during their term of office. Carol Tucker of Macmillan Cancer Support and Barry Stickings, Chairman of MACS, thanked both Captains, and Monmouth Golf Club, for organising the event, and in particular, they wanted to say a very special thank you to the Sponsors and to the team captains for supporting their charities. The success of an event like this is down to organisation and commitment, and in Sue Monmouth had a seasoned campaigner at the helm, with previous experience of these events, and the result on the day was a staggering amount of £ 4,259 to be shared between the two recipient charities. On the day Sue was assisted by Val Higgins whilst the ever reliable Marion Workman was responsible for the impressive prize display. A good days golf was enjoyed by all the players and this was followed by a splendid buffet served by the Club caterer Elaine Matthews and her staff while Club steward Tony kept the drinks flowing from the bar. Before the presentation of the prizes, David Evans thanked Sue Edwards for all her hard work in making this such a successful day, also the Sponsors and teams for their support, and to club secretary Peter Tully for the help given to both captains. Barry Stickings ( MACS ) gave a brief resume of how the charity had started and the types of eye conditions that some children are born with and the support that the charity gives to the parents of these children. He thanked everyone involved for their support. LADIES BOW OUT AT NEFYN.
Monmouth Ladies today bowed out of the Ladies Welsh Team Championships at the clifftop Nefyn Golf Club in North Wales. Our girls were defeated 4-1 by the Ladies from Bull Bay Golf Club, which is situated on Anglesey and is the most northerly course in the Principality. Team spokeslady Jackie Collinson insisted that the MGC team were the equal of the victors, but having seen a forecast of inclement weather in the area for tomorrow, they decided to bow out. That doesn't sound like Jackie to me !!!

Senior Captains' Report 2007
CAPTAIN’S REPORT - AGM 30TH OCTOBER, 2007 Mr President, Past Captain Doug, previous Captains, Members, I have the great pleasure of presenting the Annual Report for the last twelve months and two weeks! First to thank many people who have helped in the running of our Seniors’ section. To Tony our Secretary and Treasurer who sorts out fixtures, finances and who is a great support on Tuesday afternoons. To Club Secretary Peter who solves every problem and is always a most cheerful source of advice. To Hywel for his excellent work in running the Seniors’ Open and similarly to Anne Crocker in the Mixed Open. I see quite a lot of Hywel’s work at the Open and greatly appreciate his care and planning. I feel that both of the events are a tremendous showcase for the club and they generate a wonderful atmosphere on the day. I must thank Maurice and the green staff for working so hard to present the course in the best possible condition. They have battled through a most difficult year and in recent months the course has been in excellent condition. To Elaine and Tony for looking after us so well. Our meals are as good or better than most other clubs we visit. To Doug for much good advice. Last but not least to Jim who has been unfailingly loyal and helpful and who has given me wonderful support. Our numbers continue to grow. 74 people have played at least once on a Tuesday. We have had 50 or over twice and on 20 Tuesdays we have been over 40. Sadly we lost 7 Tuesdays when the course was closed and on several other Tuesdays numbers were low because of extreme weather. It was my bad luck to run into the wettest weather for some hundreds of years. I would like to mention our system of play based on drawing cards every Tuesday. It is the best system of all the clubs we play. It is fair and produces a constantly changing mixture of players. Our competitions have been well supported although not everyone enjoys playing from the white tees. I feel that putting up booking sheets for tee times greatly helps the running on competition days. Congratulations to all of the winners and commiserations to Jim Rees who met a high handicapped player (who does not appear on Tuesdays) in the final of the Lincoln Cup. One of the highlights of the year was the Away Day and our second visit to Sapey Golf Club. We were fortunate to have a dry afternoon and everyone enjoyed the course and the splendid meal — especially Derek Watson who won for the second year running. My personal memory is that of the hares on the course. Our results in matches have been better than in recent years. Of 24 matches played we won 11, lost 12 and halved 1. Most importantly we beat the ladies! 42 members played in at least one match with a loyal band of 14 turning out at least 12 times. A word on finances. The kitty was low at the start of the year following a donation to the club. I have kept prizes down slightly to try to build up funds. Thanks to your generosity we have sponsored two tee markers — my special thanks to Bob Peake. We have paid for some of the new shrubs on the course and also raised money for the MacMillan Cancer Relief Fund. Looking back over the year it has been much like my days in school with lists, registers, notices and people who do not listen or read things. As I said twelve months ago — most of you know much more about golf than me. I hope that I have not made too many mistakes. It has been an honour and a privilege to have been your captain; you are a fine bunch of people.
No problems for Maria
The Ladies Autumn Lunch Stableford was held on Thursday 18th October, the 12 hole competition being won by Maria Di Michele with 23 points. Second on countback was Sue Humble, with Fiona Drummond taking third place with twenty points. The golf was followed by an excellent lunch provided by Elaine Matthews and her staff, a good time being had by all- another excellent day for the MGC Ladies' section.
A triumph for tired Lee.
Lee Knapper completed his 5 round sponsored golf marathon at the MGC on Friday 12th. October. Lee started at 7.10am and completed his 5 rounds in 411 shots at 3.55pm. The sponsorship total is not yet known, but Lee's efforts should mean a considerable boost to the funds of St. Joseph's Primary School, Ross on Wye.
The Girls are back in Town !!
A party from The Monmouth Golf Club Ladies' section are back in town after a most enjoyable visit to Carlyon Bay Hotel and Golf Club , near St. Austell in Cornwall. A great time was had by all, with a daily texas scramble in beautiful weather, followed by excellent meals and a beverage or two in the lounge . The overall team competition was won by Anne Grieves, Kim Wham and Lorna Roy, the putting competition by Jean Evans, nearest the pin by Joan Wills and the longest drive by Sylvia, a guest entrant who just pipped Kim WonderWham. The card draw was won by Pat Davitt who was presented with a fine watercolour of the MGC first tee painted by Lillian Rawlinson-Winder.All have come home weighing a little more as a result of the tempting food, particularly the Cornish Cream Teas, their purses, however, weigh less as the local shopping also proved to be too tempting. The ladies who travelled wish to express their gratitude to Lyndsey Watkins, Carole Hayes and Jean Evans for all their hard work in ensuring that this, the third annual visit to the venue, was an outstanding success.
Roger takes Lincoln
Roger Watkins won the Lincoln Cup defeating Seniors' vice-captain Jim Rees in the Final played on Monday October 8th.
MGC collect Wales in Bloom Trophy
The presentation ceremony for the 2007 Wales in Bloom awards took place at Caerphilly Castle on Friday 28th September. Monmouth Golf Club were winners of the Golf Club in Bloom 2007 prize and the Trophy was proudly collected by Club secretary Peter Tully and his wife Pauline who had done much of the work on the gardens around the Clubhouse. The ceremony was also attended by Club President Ken Brown and his wife, Irene. Ken's flabber had never been so gasted when he discovered that the Mayor of Caerphilly who adressed the gathering in Welsh was a Lancastrian like himself. A picture of the presentation will be uploaded on to the gallery section as soon as possible.
DENNIS GWATKIN and JOHN WILLS

In second place was Tom Whitcombe of Pontnewydd Golf Club and third was Monmouth's Josh Davies . In Division Two Louis Cull of Forest Hills was the victor whilst the Howard Jones cup for the best score by a Monmouth member went to James McGrath. In the Junior Junior 12 hole competition, Victoria Wakely-Jones of Sherdon Golf Club took the spoils with a net 45.
Land Purchase Negotiations
Most members will be aware that the Club have, for some time, been in negotiation with our landlord, Mr. Brian Powell, in the hope that we might be able to purchase the 57 acres of land that are currently leased from him. A special meeting of the Executive Committee was held on Thursday 30th August where the committee members were brought up to date on recent developments. In view of the fact that a considerable gulf exists between Mr. Powell’s valuation and that of the Club, a small group of the committee have been authorised to continue negotiations and to ascertain the minimum figure acceptable to Mr. Powell. Once this figure has been ascertained, a Special General Meeting of members will be convened to discuss the options open to the Club. Garth Lamb Captain.

Tense Finish to Mixed Open
At last, just when we had all given up on Summer 2007, perfect conditions prevailed for Monmouth Golf Club's Mixed open on Sunday August 26th. The course was immaculate as was the weather and some fine golf was played, culminating in a tense finish with the top four pairs all recording 41 points. After scrutiny of the cards R and A woodward were declared winners, ahead of Monmouth's own Ian Lewis and Sue Humble. Ed Turner and anne Crocker from Ross on Wye took third place ahead of Wenvoe duo M and M Lewis. The ball kitty was scooped by Home pair Jeremy and Pat Sullivan with, surprisingly, the only two of the day. A splendid post golf meal was prepared by Elaine Matthews and her helpers after which the prize giving was held in the convivial atmosphere of the Club lounge. There were no losers on such a day and all went away having enjoyed a superb day's golf.
THIRD TIME BLOOMING LUCKY
After two years as runners up, we are delighted to announce that Monmouth Golf Club has won the golf section of the 2007 Wales in Bloom competition. The Club committee would like to express their appreciation to everyone involved in bringing this prestigious award to MGC, particularly to Pauline Tully, Brian Stockwell and David Evans who all put in many hours hard work to present the clubhouse surrounds at their best. The awards ceremony is to be held at Caerphilly Castle on September 28th.
Andreas wins Seniors' Cup
On a beautiful Summer's day, we haven't been able to say that often this year, a large contingent of the MGC Seniors' section did battle for the Seniors' Cup. Underfoot the conditions remained damp after all the recent rain but that did not prevent some fine golf being played. A very close finish ensued with David Crocker in third place with a net 69, one shot behind Lionel Watkins and Andreas Weinhardt who won the trophy on countback.

SENIORS NEWS
MONMOUTH GOLF CLUB SENIORS (May 2007) The Seniors’ May-time fixture list included a home match against Raglan, which they won by 6 games to 2, and away matches at Pontypool and St. Pierre, where they were defeated 5/3 and 6/2 respectively. Visitors are finding it as difficult to secure a win against the Seniors on their home course as the Seniors are in posting an away win. In June they host visits from Ross-on-Wye, Pontypool and St. Pierre and go to the Forest of Dean in further pursuit of an elusive away victory. Phil Morgan topped the scores in the Rose Bowl competition with 40 points followed by Ian Lewis in second place with 38 and Derrick Lawton in third with 35. Forty entrants from the section keenly contested a Stableford competition for a power trolley, generously donated by Maurice Harrison. Seniors’ Captain, Terry Rogers, presented this splendid prize to John Beynon who came in with the winning score of 37 points. The partnership of John Blewett and Mostyn Woodfield proved too strong for the opposition in the Ena Lightly Shield. An unbeaten score of 37 points in this Greensome Foursomes competition made them worthy winners, leaving Alan Lloyd and Don Andrews in second place with 36 points and Mike Eccleshall and David Crocker a further point behind in third place. The annual, springtime trip to the courses of Brittany, by eight peripatetic members of the Senior section, concluded in a sudden-death play-off for first position between Phil Morgan and Mike Merrick. Having played seven rounds during their week’s stay it still took an additional four holes to separate these two, with Phil putting out for a birdie on the fourth green to win for the second consecutive year on French soil.
